ShortPixel is worth considering when preparing images and maintaining a growing WordPress library takes recurring time. Its value depends on your current image setup, publishing volume and the quality you need to preserve. Start with a small test, count thumbnails when estimating credits and compare the result before committing to a paid plan.
Large image files can add work to an otherwise simple publishing routine. You create a hero image, upload it, then discover that your page is serving a much larger file than it needs.
ShortPixel offers tools for compressing images and creating additional formats. The important decision is which part of that process you need help with and whether your existing setup already handles it.
This review focuses on ShortPixel Image Optimizer for WordPress. It is a research-based assessment of the official documentation, checked on 6 November 2026. I haven’t run a hands-on ShortPixel benchmark for this review.
What Is ShortPixel and Who Created It?
ShortPixel provides image optimisation tools that can reduce the amount of image data your website stores or sends to visitors, depending on the product and settings you choose.
The company identifies ID SCOUT SRL in Romania as its owner and operator. Its team page names Alex Florescu and Simon Duduica as co-founders. ShortPixel company and team
For this review, the main product is ShortPixel Image Optimizer, often shortened to SPIO. A separate plugin, ShortPixel Adaptive Images, handles image delivery differently. Understanding that distinction is more useful than treating every ShortPixel feature as part of one identical setup.
Quick Note: I’m John Crossley, founder of Flex For Families. I review online business opportunities through the lens of family life, focusing on costs, time commitments, risks, and whether they genuinely help parents create more flexibility.
How Does ShortPixel Image Optimizer Work?
ShortPixel Image Optimizer sends selected images to ShortPixel’s cloud service for processing, then brings the optimised versions back to your site.
The documented process covers originals and selected WordPress thumbnails. The plugin replaces the local files with optimised versions and can retain backups. If you enable WebP or AVIF generation, additional files can be stored alongside them. How Image Optimizer works
For a blogger, that creates two potential uses. You can process images as you upload them, and you can work through an existing Media Library.
Before starting a large job, check which image sizes and formats are included. A library with several years of uploads can contain many more files than the number of images you remember adding.
How Is Image Optimizer Different From Adaptive Images?
Image Optimizer’s core job is processing stored files. Adaptive Images serves optimised, appropriately sized versions through ShortPixel’s CDN while leaving the original files unchanged.
| Question | Image Optimizer | Adaptive Images |
|---|---|---|
| What happens to the stored original? | It can be replaced, with an optional backup | The original stays unchanged |
| What is the central workflow? | Process files in your library | Generate and deliver versions for visitors |
| What should you review? | Backups, selected sizes and output formats | Delivery, compatibility and traffic usage |
The distinction has an extra detail. Image Optimizer also offers optional ShortPixel CDN delivery, so using that plugin doesn’t automatically mean every delivery setting is local. Look at the configuration you enable. Plugin comparison and Image Optimizer CDN credit rules
For a beginner, choose the job first. If you want to process stored files, assess Image Optimizer. If the problem is delivering suitable versions to different devices, investigate the delivery workflow and test it with your theme and other optimisation tools.
Which Compression Setting Should Bloggers Choose?
Choose by comparing representative results. A photograph, a screenshot and a branded graphic with small text can react differently to compression.
ShortPixel describes three established options.
| Setting | General Aim | What to Inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Lossy | Stronger file-size reduction with some image information removed | Faces, fine texture, edges and visible artefacts |
| Glossy | A balance that prioritises visual quality more than aggressive compression | Detailed photographs and gradients |
| Lossless | Preserve the original pixel information while reducing size where possible | Whether the smaller saving justifies the workflow |
These are the provider’s descriptions, rather than results from my own comparative test. ShortPixel compression FAQ
Take one example of each image type you actually publish. View the result at the size readers will see, then zoom in where detail matters. Check the lettering on a hero graphic and the small controls in a tutorial screenshot.
Choose a setting because the output remains suitable for the article. An impressive saving is less useful if a reader struggles to read the image.

How Do ShortPixel Credits Work?
For Image Optimizer, credits can be consumed by the original image, its selected thumbnails and additional format versions. Your upload count alone is an incomplete estimate.
ShortPixel says an optimisation uses a credit when it achieves at least a 5% reduction. Its documentation counts each processed thumbnail separately and adds credits for generated WebP or AVIF counterparts. Optional CDN delivery has a separate traffic-based use of credits. Detailed credit rules
Here is a fictional estimate using those rules. It assumes every selected original and thumbnail qualifies for a charged optimisation and that a WebP counterpart is generated for each.
| Processing Choice | Example Credits |
|---|---|
| One original image | 1 |
| Four selected thumbnails | 4 |
| WebP copies of those five files | 5 |
| Total for that upload | 10 |
Under those assumptions, ten uploads would use 100 credits. Your theme, selected sizes, output settings and actual processing results can produce a different total.
Use a small test to inspect the account’s consumption. Once you understand that pattern, estimate a typical month and any backlog separately.

Is ShortPixel’s Free Allowance Enough?
It may be enough for a limited publishing schedule or an initial test. ShortPixel currently advertises 100 free optimisation credits per month.
When the free allowance is exhausted, the provider says processing pauses until the allowance renews or you purchase further capacity. Image Optimizer product page and Free allowance guidance
Consider three quantities before deciding whether Free is enough.
- How many new images you upload in a typical month.
- How many thumbnail sizes and additional formats you process.
- How many existing images you want to optimise.
A blog with few new uploads but a large backlog has a different buying decision from one publishing image-heavy articles every week. Start with the job you want to complete this month.
How Much Does ShortPixel Cost?
ShortPixel offers free capacity, one-time credits and an ongoing Unlimited plan. The most suitable payment model depends on how often you need processing.
| Option | Published Price Information Checked | Suitable Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 100 optimisation credits per month | Test the process and assess a small workload |
| One-time credits | Packages available, with the amount shown when you select a package | Price a finite backlog or occasional uploads |
| Unlimited monthly | $9.99 per month on the product page and in the terms | Compare with a recurring image workload |
| Unlimited annual | Advertised at $8.33 per month equivalent when billed yearly | Check the full annual payment before choosing |
Prices are in US dollars. The annual equivalent implies a budget of roughly $100 for a year, but that rounded calculation is not a verified checkout total. Confirm the actual annual charge, tax, renewal terms and included limits before purchasing. The one-time package amounts were not reliably exposed in the retrieved official pricing page, so I haven’t quoted them. Product pricing, Annual pricing page and Terms
One-time credits do not expire according to ShortPixel’s guidance. They may be worth pricing when you want to process a fixed library without a continuing subscription. One-time plans explained
Unlimited also has conditions. Check the fair-use terms and CDN allowance if you enable delivery. The compression allowance and a traffic allowance describe different resources, so compare both with your intended setup.
What Should You Check Before Optimising Existing Images?
Keep a usable backup, test a small selection and confirm the scope before running a bulk job.
ShortPixel specifically recommends its Backup Originals setting if you want to restore files or reprocess them with a different method. Retaining those files also uses storage, so include that in your planning. Backup Originals guidance
A practical first pass is to do the following.
- Check what your hosting, CDN and existing plugins already do to images.
- Confirm you have an independent site and media backup you can restore.
- Review the selected thumbnails, formats and backup setting.
- Process a few representative images.
- Open the affected pages on desktop and mobile.
- Check quality, image loading and credit consumption.
- Expand the job once those results meet your needs.
If a page uses image delivery features from several tools, look for overlapping responsibilities. Assigning compression and delivery deliberately makes it easier to understand which setting changed the result.
Where Does Kre8or Fit Into Your Image Workflow?
Kre8or fits at the image creation stage. You can then prepare the chosen asset for the article and check the file that visitors actually receive.
I use AI tools for images and have shared my own Kre8or experience separately. If creating a suitable visual is taking more time than preparing it for publication, that review gives you a place to assess the creation process.
Looking for help creating your blog visuals? Read my Kre8or AI review for my experience with its image creation workflow. Then check the dimensions, format and published quality of the image you choose.
My Kre8or review discusses WebP export. That makes it particularly important to check the format you already have before planning further conversion. ShortPixel’s FAQ says its next-generation format feature creates WebP or AVIF versions from supported source formats and does not optimise existing WebP or AVIF files through that process. ShortPixel format FAQ
A sensible routine is to choose a useful visual, crop or size it for its role, export a suitable format and inspect the published page. Add ShortPixel where it resolves a remaining compression or delivery job in that routine.

Will ShortPixel Improve Your Site Speed?
It can reduce image transfer size when the chosen processing achieves a useful saving. How much a whole page improves depends on the images it serves and the other work required to load that page.
Page performance also involves dimensions, format choice, loading priority and delivery. Google’s image-performance guidance discusses these as related decisions. Image performance guidance
For your own comparison, record the same page before and after the change. Use comparable conditions and inspect the actual image requests as well as the headline score. Repeat the check where results vary.
A smaller file in the Media Library doesn’t by itself confirm which version the page served to a visitor. Check the published result, particularly if you enable a new format or CDN delivery.
I haven’t measured a ShortPixel speed increase on FFF for this review. My recommendation is based on the documented workflow and whether it solves a task on your site.
What Are the Pros and Cons?
The main strengths to assess are convenience, batch processing and control over what gets processed. The trade-offs include planning the scope and checking quality.
| Potential Advantages | Limits and Considerations |
|---|---|
| Process new uploads and existing images | A backlog can use more capacity than expected |
| Select thumbnail sizes | Credits can exceed the number of uploads |
| Choose compression settings | Visual quality needs checking on your images |
| Generate additional formats | Generation and successful delivery are separate checks |
| Use one-time credits for occasional work | Package price and consumption need estimating |
| Retain originals for restoration | Backups and additional formats can use storage |
| Explore CDN delivery options | Existing optimisation tools may already handle that role |
These are buying considerations from the documented product, rather than a report of personal support or reliability problems.
Who Should Use ShortPixel, and Who May Already Have Enough?
ShortPixel is worth testing if you repeatedly prepare images by hand or need to process a growing library. It is easier to assess its value when you can name the unfinished job.
For example, you may have an archive of large JPEG files and want to compare compression options. Or you may want new uploads and selected thumbnails processed as part of publishing.
You may already have enough if your existing image preparation and delivery setup produces suitable files without much work. Check a real page before adding another service.
If your main difficulty is creating an image that fits the article, start with the creation workflow in the Kre8or review. If the visual is ready but file handling takes time, assess the optimisation step.
About the Reviewer
Hi, I’m John Crossley, founder of Flex For Families.
I’m a parent, blogger, and online business owner who helps families find realistic ways to create more flexibility through blogging, affiliate marketing, and online business.
Like many people, I’ve spent years researching online opportunities, testing platforms, and learning how to separate genuine business models from expensive hype. I’ve also experienced the frustration of chasing opportunities that promised freedom but demanded more time away from family.
Today, I use that experience to review courses, side hustles, AI opportunities, and online business programmes through a simple lens:
Will this genuinely help parents create more flexibility, or will it create more pressure?
Every review on Flex For Families focuses on costs, time commitments, risks, and realistic expectations, so you can make informed decisions before investing your time or money.
Is ShortPixel Worth It for a Growing Blog?
It is worth a small test when image preparation or an existing library creates recurring work. Start with the free allowance, inspect quality and measure how many credits your chosen settings consume.
For a finite backlog, compare a one-time package with the ongoing plan. For regular publishing, assess the monthly work saved alongside the subscription cost and your current setup.
The strongest reason to pay is a repeatable process that delivers suitable images with less effort. Verify that on your own representative files before committing a whole library.
Frequently Asked Questions
These answers cover common decisions before installing or paying for ShortPixel.
Is ShortPixel Free?
ShortPixel advertises 100 free optimisation credits per month. Thumbnails and additional format processing can consume credits, so the allowance does not necessarily cover 100 uploads.
Does One Image Use One Credit?
An original image can use one credit for a qualifying optimisation, but selected thumbnails and additional format versions can add to the total. Review the processing settings and actual consumption.
Can I Restore Images After ShortPixel Optimisation?
You need a usable original or backup. Enable and verify the Backup Originals option if you plan to use the plugin’s restoration or reoptimisation workflow.
Do I Need Image Optimizer and Adaptive Images Together?
Start with the job you need to solve. Image Optimizer processes stored files, while Adaptive Images focuses on delivering optimised versions through a CDN. Check existing tools and the provider’s setup guidance before combining them.
Will ShortPixel Guarantee a Better PageSpeed Score?
No particular improvement is established by this review. Compare a real page before and after, check the image versions actually served and account for other performance factors.
Can ShortPixel Create My Blog Images?
This review assesses compression and delivery of images you already have. For help choosing an image creation tool, see my Kre8or review linked in the workflow section.
